Remarks on Marking

چکیده
This paper calls for a reexamination of the Marking Theory of HPSG, which in its standard form involves a considerable amount of dedicated formal machinery, but which proves to be inapplicable for most types of grammatical marking. As an alternative, it is demonstrated that head-marker phrases can be reanalyzed as head-complement structures, with the marking element treated as the syntactic head. This approach allows the elimination of all markingspecific formal apparatus, with the exception of the attribute MARKING, which percolates as an ordinary HEAD feature, and whose function is significantly expanded. The proposed approach allows marking elements to be related to other lexical heads (prepositions, in particular), and marking constructions are better integrated in the grammar, rather than being grouped into an exceptional class of head-marker phrases. 1 Assumptions and Consequences The Marking Theory in Pollard and Sag (1994) is introduced primarily in order to analyze a single construction—that-marked finite clauses in English—although a few other potentially relevant constructions are mentioned in passing. Focusing on that-clauses for the moment, consider the simple example (1) Kim fears [that Sandy knows the truth]. A satisfactory analysis of the bracketed phrase must meet a number of requirements. First, it must license the binary combination of that (which I will refer to pre-theoretically as the “marking element,” as opposed to “marker”) with the sentence Sandy knows the truth (I ignore other conceivable, but implausible syntactic analyses of this construction): (2) S

Enhancing Skid Resistance of Two-Component Road Marking Paint using Mineral and Recycled Materials
Low skid resistance of road marking paint is one of the major issues in the safety of vehicle drivers, cyclists, and pedestrians when traveling on the city streets. Among the variety of marking paint, two-component paint is widely used at intersections and roundabouts. Therefore, the paint used should have adequate skid resistance. The object of this study was to evaluat...
متن کاملEvaluation of Tree Marking in Persian Ironwood-hornbeam Stands at Bahramnia Forestry Plan and Its Effect on Stand Structure
Tree marking can cause changes in forest. This study aimed to assess tree marking operation and to predict its effect on stand structure of Persian ironwood-hornbeam stands at Bahramnia forestry plan, north of Iran. Therefore 98 trees that were marked in compartment 9 of the mentioned forest in 2017 based on selection system and according to the recent laws of Forests, Range and Watershed Manag...
متن کاملSOME REMARKS ON ALMOST UNISERIAL RINGS AND MODULES
In this paper we study almost uniserial rings and modules. An R−module M is called almost uniserial if any two nonisomorphic submodules are linearly ordered by inclusion. A ring R is an almost left uniserial ring if R_R is almost uniserial. We give some necessary and sufficient condition for an Artinian ring to be almost left uniserial.
متن کاملRemarks on Distance-Balanced Graphs
Distance-balanced graphs are introduced as graphs in which every edge uv has the following property: the number of vertices closer to u than to v is equal to the number of vertices closer to v than to u. Basic properties of these graphs are obtained. In this paper, we study the conditions under which some graph operations produce a distance-balanced graph.
متن کاملRemarks on Modern Track Geometry Maintenance
A short survey on modern track maintenance methods is given, concentrating on the developments in recent years. The ongoing refinement of the machinery should be shown as the influence of IT-solutions. On top the economic view to the track infrastructure is briefly demonstrated. Further developments in track hardware solutions must respect the obtained high level of track work mechanization. H...
